DisFanReview's: "SHORTS!" podcast #12
This week we have an incredibly fun adventure inside the Wonderful World of Disney fandom! This week we have a TON of Disney new, and some fun stuff that you are gonna LOVE! Our Musical menagerie includes songs from Late Night Alumni, Randy Newman, Los Lobos, and a DisFanReview EXCLUSIVE, the STAR TOURS Imperial march Remix!!! now as always you can find our podcast on Podbean.com and iTunes, or you can listen RIGHT NOW! by clicking on the player below.
Is this an Alice In Wonderland 'cross network' ad?

Is this one of the new "Cross Network" ads that Disney will be airing here in the United States in the next couple weeks? I think so. We just found this posted on Walt Disney Studios U.K. on YouTube.
As of yet unseen footag? CHECK. Johnny Depp, Anne Hataway and other talking about the film? CHECK. In fact the only difference that U.S. audiences will see when it airs, is that the word CINEMAS will be replaced with the word THEATERS.
And, we wanted to let you guys get a look at the RETURN of the DisFanReview Show on YouTube! This our first new video since JULY 2009!

Random Notes 1/26/10

this week there is a lot going on for Disney fans! We begin with new Cars 2 concept art. This image comes to us from Pixar Planet and shows Lightning McQueen tearing it up on race track in the shadow of Mt. Fuji in Japan! The story of Cars 2 is already partly known. Apparently Mater is mistaken for a spy when he saves the life of a James Bond type character Finn McMissle, who apparently looks like an Aston Martin sports car(A favorite of James Bond).

Walt Disney Studios India has launched the Ad campaign for their first live action film, Zokkomon. According to the press release, this is what the film is about:
“Zokkomon” is an action-adventure film about an orphan boy, Kunal, who discovers how cruel life is when he is abandoned by his heartless uncle. Left to fend for himself, Kunal begins his epic journey of adventure and transformation to become the superhero character Zokkomon.
The trailer for the film was also released but we have been unable to find it ANYWHERE on the net. But the second it pops up, you know we will have it!
Thanks to Disnology for the info!!!

So Disney is planning a huge cross network promotional campaign leading up to the release of their Super Bowl ad for "Alice In Wonderland." all ads will be exclusive to the individual network, and will feature interviews with director Tim Burton, and the stars of the film as well as new footage from the film. Watch the video for more details.
The schedule for Disney's "Alice in Wonderland" cross network promotion is as follows:
ABC
“Desperate Housewives,” Jan. 31, 9/8c
“The Bachelor,” Feb. 1, 8/7c
ESPN
2010 NFL Pro Bowl, Jan. 31, 7:20ET
NBA NUGGETS/LAKERS game, Feb. 5, 10:30ET
ABC FAMILY
“Greek,” Feb. 1, 10/9c
“The Parent Trap,” Feb. 6, 8/7c
Lastly, we have just found out that "Princess and the Frog" will be released on Blu-Ray and DVD on March 16th, 2010 here in the United States. Meanwhile, we love to get a glimpse at how Disney movies are marketed in different countries, and leave it to the French to release a "Princess and the Frog" trailer that relives the romance of Disney's animated classics. This video comes to us from Walt Disney Studios France on YouTube. -Admiral Duke

Video Madness 1/26/2010 Wacky Walt
This week we have a collection of videos that showcase the man himself, Walt Disney. Our first video is short interview segment that comes to us from the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation(CBC. Walt talks about his Canadian roots, and an interesting tale about the first Disney's to settle in The United States and the land that they had originally settled.
This video is a classic. Jerry Lewis and Walt Disney on "Whats My Line?" from November 1956. Walt yuks it up with Lewis, and the celebrity panel. He also talks about Television, Disneyland and more.
This video HAS to be viewed in fullscreen! It is from really fun video of retro Disneyland! "Disneyland After Dark" is a beautifully filmed postcard of the "Happiest Place on Earth." Watch for Uncle Walt in his wacky hat at the end. -Admiral Duke

Fan Art Friday 1/23/10 Joe Penniston

This weeks "Fan Art Friday" artist is a photographer I found on photo sharing site Flickr.
The profile for Express Monorail(aka Joe Penniston) states:
"One thing that's become obvious to me over the last few years is that there is no shortage of Disney fans that love to share their Disney content. And the content comes in all different shapes and sizes. Everything from podcasts, to online radio stations, to books, to blogs and articles, to fan websites, message forums, video sharing, picture sharing, and the list goes on. I'm very grateful for all of these types of fellow Disney geeks and I take advantage of nearly all the different types of free content available to give me my daily Disney fix. It really makes being a Disney fan that much more enjoyable (and addicting, I must admit). For me, as one can easily tell, I enjoy sharing my Disney photography. The reason is two fold for me. First and foremost, I became fascinated with creating and sharing photography - specifically Disney photography. Then, soon after I started sharing my photography online, I started to realize that many people actually enjoy my work and seeing the world of Disney through the lens of my camera. The latter is what really sealed the deal for me and has really kind of formed my addiction / obsession / hobby. Knowing that people actually enjoy my work really makes doing this all the more worthwhile and it has kind of become my way of giving back to the Disney community of content providers out there."
Now those are words we here at DisFan Review can really get behind!

I am particularly fond of Joe's ability to capture the beloved rides and sights we are so familiar with but doing so in a way that is artistic and unique.
Random Notes 1/23/10

This weekend we have some fun stuff for you. We start out with one of my favorite people to follow on TWITTER. The Director of Toy Story 3, Lee Unkrich or by his TWITTER handle @LeeUnkrich. Normally Lee tweets with cool animation videos from all over the world or a fun picture or something wild. this week he his trying to raise money for the Clinton Bush Haiti Relief Fund. you can find a couple of Disney/Pixar items, but this one is by far the one that is on my I want it, but cant afford it list. It is a Toy Story 3 poster signed by none other than Tom Hanks! You can bid on it here at Ebay.com
Now, here is Lee, in person talking about Toy Story 3 in this short featurette that is currently being featured at the Animation Academy at Disney's California Adventure. Of course, I wont tell anyone that this video has been avaiable since January 1st on Disney/Pixar's YouTube page.
Disney parks has just released these new images of Disneyland's 55th anniversary merchandise. The themed artwork has a fun retro feel, that really has an early 60's feel to it. the coolest thing that i have seen so far is the 55th anniversary Mickey Mouse Club ear hat that is an exact replica of the original hat that was offered to club members back in the 1950's. You can find out more about Disneyland's 55th anniversary collection here.
Finally, the good Doctor has returned. And, this week His "Friends on the other Side" had a real classic kind of surprise for you. You can click HERE and check out where Dr. Facilier's hiding spot was. -Admiral Duke

Disney's New Aulani Hawaiian Resort

Hi there! It's the Admiral's wife. He's not around and I just saw this little gem pop up on the web. So a little hijacking post here... wanted to make sure the Admiral knows that going to Disneyland for our anniversary will be awesome! BUT this would be HEAVEN! (we'll plan it for the 20th anniversary, k?)
The Disney Resort being built in Hawaii now has a name: Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa.
Plans include:
"...amenities to engage every member of the family, a hallmark of a Disney vacation. Among the recreational highlights planned for the resort are pools and sunset facing hot tubs, a snorkeling lagoon, a variety of kids' club and other play programs for children, and a river, suitable for tube floating, running through a specially created volcanic outcropping."
You can see a highly detailed virtual tour by watching the artist concept video,
or explore the resort at the official Aulani Website.
Comment here and let the Admiral know he should take me! thanks! xo
I already picked out what I will wear! ;)

Fan Art Friday 1/15/10 Belldandies at DeviantART
I Love it when I find great art for Fan Art Friday. I hate it when I can't find any meaningful information about the artist. Such is the case with this weeks feature. So lets focus on the ART. Because that is the important part. Belldandies at DeviantART.com has an amazing gallery. filled with absolutely gorgeous images comprised of lush blacks, stark whites and rich reds. The three images above are an excellent representation of belldandies entire portfolio. First we have the Queen from Snow White looking gorgeously evil. Opposite her, we find Maleficent in all of her pure evil. I love how the reds are used not only to draw you into the picture but also to heighten the danger that these woman exude. Lastly, I just love the "WWII Propaganda" feel of the Rocketeer piece. Lots and lots of fun! Keep up the great work Belldandies! Go check out their entire gallery and let them know that DisFanReview sent you! -Admiral Duke

Disney Parks have electronic "Magic"
One thing I have always loved about Disney, is that they are extremely content oriented. Everything from Films to the Parks is about creating a quality experience. In recent days this has been illustrated specifically by the electronic media savvy of Disney Parks. First of all I have to tell you about the "HELLO" newsletter. You can receive the news letter by becoming a "My Disneyland" or "My Walt Disney World" member at Disneyland.com. Every month Disney Parks sends out this awesome email with the latest vacation deals and park news, but the coolest part is the exclusive content you can only get if you subscribe to the newsletter. Specifically I LOVE the recent addition of the 360 degree tours of some of the coolest restaurants at the Disneyland resort. pictured above you can see just a glimpse of Disneyland's Blue Bayou, and Ariel's Grotto at Disney's California Adventure. The coolest part of the newsletter is that often time it shows up in your Email inbox just when you need a Disney fix!
For a couple of months now, I believed that I could not get "Mobile Magic." because every time I text the word MAGIC to 2777(which is what Disney's websites say to do) on my Verizon phone, I would receive a reply text that said that "Mobile Magic" was not available on my phone. Turns out, this is actually a glitch. You can get the app on most Verizon phones by opening the MEDIA CENTER tab in MENU, click on BROWSE & DOWNLOAD, click on GET APPLICATION, and Mobile Magic, should be the first app. on the list. If you download the app. from here you should have no problem. Once i did this and agreed to pay the $9.99 for 6 months worth of service, I was stunned at the content and the extent of the applications NUMEROUS features. As you can see from the images above, features are bountiful! Set up is easy, and extremely specific. I can't wait to use it at Disneyland. My favorite feature of the Mobile magic app is that at any time of day when I need the aforementioned "Disney Fix" all I have to do is whip out my cell phone!

On a related note the Disney Park's blog has just released this fascinating article about one of my favorite things to do at Disneyland, Pin Trading! this article specifically addresses the issue of rare ERROR Pins, how they come about, and how when they do happen it is actually quite embarrassing for Pin trading project Manager, Steven miller. You can check that out here. Thanks Disney parks! You guys rock! -Admiral Duke

Video Madness 1/11/10 Magic Happens
This week we present a few but not all of Disney's 2001 "Magic Happens" commercials. The commercials in this series were all, very well produced and executed, and a number of these spots even recieved accolades at that years Cannes Film Festival. All of these ad's keep in step with Walt Disney's strong belief in the power of a story, As they all tell a very specific tale. The one trait that really seperates these ads from any other Disney commercials, is how they portray plausible everyday situations that have just a touch of Disney magic. Another point of interest is that these commercials are not promoting an idividual division of the company, but seem to be promoting the Disney in general. If you have never seen these fabulous shorts then we encourage you to not only enjoy these four videos, but to also seek out the remainder of the series. They are all available (through multiple sources) on YouTube. -Admiral Duke
(P.S. This is our favorite one)
Disney Fan Builds Disneyland Railroad In His Backyard
Disney fan's are crazy. They are usually a very imaginative and inventive bunch, but quite often they are also very, very obsessive. Case in point, Dave Sheegog of Anaheim Hills, CA. is an Architect, Railroad enthusiast and Disneyland fan. While this would seem a rather benign combination to some, it is the cause of quite an amazing spectacle that is located in Dave's backyard... A completely scaled replica of the Disneyland Railroad. Complete with Sleeping Beauty's castle, and all of the themed lands of Disneyland. Dave's backyard is EXACTLY the thing that every Disney fan wants in their backyard, which pretty much means that we are all Magically insane. By the way, Excellent work Dave I totally envy the fact that you literally and figuratively have Disneyland in your backyard. -Admiral Duke
Much thanks go to The Orange County Register not only for sharing Dave's Magical railroad but for providing such awesome coverage of Walt Disney's original Magic Kingdom!

DisUnrelated: SAVE "Better Off Ted"
I find it Ironic that a television show about a Massive Corporation that is ambivalent towards it's employees is, itself in danger of being canceled by a large Corporate Television Network that seems to be ambivalent towards it's audience. ABC (which is owned by Disney)apparently does not have much faith in "Better Off Ted." A witty and well written satire about the inner workings of said massive corporation: Veridian Dynamics. Since this shows debut I have been an avid viewer. "Better Off Ted's" second season has had very little promotion from ABC and was used to fill the void of more favorable shows during the Christmas lull when no one is really watching TV anyway!!! Fueled by other Fan organized effort's like the fan campaign to save CHUCK! on NBC, which has resulted in a third season that seemed incredibly unlikely this time last year, "Better Off Ted" fans are taking action! The website www.SaveBetterOffTed.com has just launched and provides several different ways for fans to take action.
First, sign the petition which already has over a thousand signatures. Or send an email to ABC president Stephen McPherson with one of two images provided on the site, someone also mentioned sending packets of coffee creamer to ABC execs, which is an in show joke. Another, rather obvious way to support the show, is to watch it. In an effort to drive home their point, the organizers of the website are encouraging all "Ted Head's" to flock to Hulu or ABC.com on Wednesday January, 13th at 8:00pm( your local time, but more to the point, the time slot between ABC's The Middle and Modern Family.)and watch "Better Off Ted." The hope is that ABC exec's will put the dots together and see that the show would have a better chance to garner a strong audience if surrounded by equally funny, but slightly more popular shows. It is indeed sad to see that ABC has little interest in continuing this hilarious and fun show, and we hope that the fans can come together and save a show that truly deserves a second chance! Now, if you've never seen "Better Off Ted" here is a look at the latest episode. Watch, enjoy and then get active and help save "BETTER OFF TED" before it becomes like Gandhi, Y'know... Dead. (The "Gandhi" thing is also an 'in' joke from the show.)-Admiral Duke
Fan Art Friday 1/8/10
This video comes to us today from John McIntyre who, with the help of his 7 year old son, put it together over Christmas break. John was once employed by our favorite company working on Disney's cartoons "Brandy and Mr. Whiskers" and "The Replacements." John now works for Cartoon Network as the supervising director on Flapjack.
The Mickeys in the video are one of 3. John's wife, the talented Theresa Smythe, says their son has had this Mickey since he went to Disneyland for the first time when he was 1. They have the others of this "BELOVED" toy as back up in case one gets lost or washed. We especially love that this vid is reminiscent of early Mickey Mouse shorts.

In this weeks EPIC(ly short) adventure into Disney fandom, we have our regular recap of the happenings at DisFanReview.com, a frustrating tale of the first day of registration for Disney Park’s “Give a Day, Get a Disney Day” promotion, and our thoughts on the completion of the Disney/Marvel mega deal. This weeks music includes a song from British Punk band Snuff, the “You’ve got a friend in Remix” and a really amazing buried treasure of a track from 60’s Rock band, The Rationals. TESTOSTERONE WARNING: The following website is intended for Geeky males between the ages of 18-Dead. And some of the links and photo's are a little racy and not intended for children. Having said that, I am a sucker for a simple concept and the name really say's it all. HotChicksWithStormtroopers.com is exactly that. A website full of photographs and video of well... Hot chicks with Stormtroopers. I told you it was a simple concept.
Our last bit of Star Wars stuff is actually a video of our own. Episode #5 of the "old" DisFanReview video series on YouTube was Star Wars themed and features some great videos and Star Wars art. - Admiral Duke

DisFan Spotlight: HomeStarRunnerTron @ YouTube
This is why I LOVE the Disney fans. They are an inventive and fun loving bunch! This video is a tribute to the Disney/Pixar "Upular" remix that debuted on YouTube just a couple weeks ago. HomeStarRunnerTron loved it so much he decided to make a goofy video of him re-enacting and lip syncing along. This is unadulterated fun, I wish we all had the guts to just put ourselves out there and just enjoy the pure fun of the magic that we all love. This is a really great video buddy! Thanks for sharing it with us! -Admiral Duke

Video Madness 1/4/10
Our first video is from Disney/Pixar and is another short featurette about the upcoming, soon to be classic Toy Story 3. I mean c'mon, how can it not be a classic? The actual embed comes to us from the awesome folks over at TrailerAddict.com. The great thing about TrailerAddict is that no matter what, they always have an embedable version of trailers and video's that Disney does not allow embed's for. Why, Oh why do you make me work so hard Disney?
Our second video, is quite a find. If you have seen the recent Spike Jones film "Where the Wild Things Are" Then you may have had the same experience I did. I fell asleep half way through it. I was really shocked, I never fall asleep during movies, even the bad ones. I really like Spike Jones' body of work. He has always been an inventive and imaginative director. Maurice Sendaks book is a treasured part of my childhood, but for some reason this movie just bored me to sleep. So what does any of this have to do with Disney? This video is an early CGI test, a combination of computer animated backgrounds and animated characters, that was directed by none other than John Lasseter back in the very early 80's. When Disney owned the Rights to the book. If Disney had actually pursued this project and made the "Where the Wild Things Are" film then maybe I would not have slept through it.
At midnight, January 4th "Honey I Shrunk the Audience" had its last performance at the Tomorrowland theatre at Disneyland. Here we have two videos from one of our favorite YouTuber's H10N90. The first is how the entrance to the attraction appeared just a couple weeks ago and the second is a rather rough looking video of the very last opening spiel from the now CLOSED show. -Admiral Duke

Our Favorite DisFanReview Articles from 2009

This is by no means a "Best of" post simply a small gathering of DisFanReview's Staff favorites. Also keep in mind that they are in no specific order. Believe me we tried to make it a top five and there was no way to come to a consensus. There was lots of in fighting, one staffer was even bitten by a goat. Yeah, we are still trying to figure out who brought the goat. So without any further dawdling, here are our favorite 5 DisFanReview article's of 2009.
In October we brought you a series of videos that appear to show ghosts wandering the grounds of the "Happiest Place on Earth." One video in particular seemed to show the ghostly figure of Uncle Walt himself. Some people say the whole "Ghost's at Disneyland" thing is just a gimmick to get more people in the parks, I say, If Walt Disney loved Disneyland as much as he is reported too, wouldn't he hang out there all of the time, even in the afterlife? I know I would. After all, doesn't Disneyland have free admission for "Grim Grinning Ghosts?"
In august we brought you this cute, and slightly irritating story of a young girl who lives in a rural town, and tried to earn money for a trip to Disneyland by selling lemonade. That is until the local authorities stepped in and shut down her lemonade stand. You can read the entire article HERE.
Don't you hate it when you are trying to video tape your kid's and some jerk walks right in front of you, completely blocking your child and ruining the frame? What if that jerk was Nicolas Cage? This is a real video. This actually happened and... Well click HERE, read the article and see this wild video for yourself. I cannot believe Nicolas Cage's reaction to the situation. Plus, it's totally unbelievable to me that this video has less than a thousand views. Show it to everyone you know!
Okay so the above image actually has nothing to do with the article in question... Okay thats not true. The article in question is about Reggae artist Matisyahu's shout out to DisFanReview, live on stage in Brooklyn, NY. As Mikey from Magic City Mayhem put it, "It's like getting a shout out from the Beastie Boys in front of the whole world!" Yeah, that is exactly how we felt about it. Matisyahu is just too cool! Now the image above is actually a concert poster that we put together to commemorate Matisyahu's October 21st 2009 live show at the House of Blues in Downtown Disney at the Disneyland Resort.
This was personal favorite. As a fan of Disneyland, I love to shoot video, every time I am at the parks. It is just so much fun to have a visual record of the experience. Back in 1956 Robbins Barstow had the same idea. he took his 8mm camera and shot his families entire trip and made a nice home movie out of it. The difference? Mr. Barstow's "Disneyland Dream" eventually became a national treasure, now forever enshrined at the Library of Congress. -Admiral Duke

Disney's "Give a day, Get an Error Screen" Promotion
Today, Disney Parks "Give a day,Get a Disney day" promotion kicked off with a bang! Or more to the point, a collective THUD as countless people across the United State's & Canada slammed their heads into their keyboards in total frustration, after receiving error screen, after error screen when they tried to register for the program. I know this for a fact because I was one of the throng of the frustrated and confused. I have the bruises on my forehead to prove it. As I sit here in the DisFanReview Studio's typing this article, I have not yet been able to register for "G.a.d.g.a.D.d." and I have been at it for over 20 hours now. I'm not even kidding. I am actually shocked at the entire thing. Has no one at Disney been paying attention to the state of affairs out here? The economy stinks and people want to feel good. About the world and themselves. Americans are a charitable people. They want to give to those less fortunate. People also want a break from all the crappy things going on in the world. Where else is better than Disney Parks? BUT I HAVE LEFT OUT THE MOST IMPORTANT PART!! 99% of people like get FREE STUFF. Given all these facts, that seem to me to be self evident and, rather common knowledge, why is it no one at Disney could pull together a few more servers to beef up their system for the MAJOR demand that an awesome promotion like this was guaranteed to generate? This is not Disney's first time around the block. Surely someone in the I.T. department said, "Hey, You think we may need to upgrade the system for all the traffic thats gonna hit us on Jan. 1st? You just spent 4 BILLION to buy MARVEL, surely shoring up your networks infrastructure would be chump change compared. Look, the reason I am so bothered by this, is because of the opportunity lost. I have four children, whom I am trying to teach real values to. Like the value of serving your fellow man, and of course recognizing and capitalizing on a great offer when you see it. I sat down with the four of them, and we logged on to register our family. I wanted them to work for and earn this Disney trip. Which in my mind meant that we did everthing as a family. Well needless to say after the fourth or fifth error screen, Even the most mature of my children was bored and had something better to do. So now I continue to sit on the computer, AWAY FROM MY FAMILY, constantly trying to register for a program that will provided me with the opportunity to teach my family a valuable life lesson and spend quality time with them while they earn a trip to Disneyland. It just doesn't seem like thats how it should work. Last night Disney Parks finally put this update on their blog:
Thanks to the generous spirit of our guests, we have had a strong response to our ‘Give a Day, Get a Disney Day’ program.
We prepared for this launch based on similar programs in the past. However, the large numbers of guests attempting to register for volunteer service in the program has created periodic slowdowns in the network, resulting in difficulty in completing the registration process.
We apologize for the inconvenience and want to let you know that we’re working to add capacity to the system to provide a better registration experience.
Be assured that new volunteer opportunities are being added to the HandsOn Network daily, and we will not hit the 1 million ticket milestone this weekend. So keep checking back to see what new volunteer opportunities have been added — and thanks for your interest in the ‘Give a Day, Get a Disney Day’ program.
Now that's a good thing to hear. Hopefully I will be able to get on and get my family registered with relative ease...when that happens. But it hasn't happened yet. -Admiral Duke
