I have been reading comics on my PSP for years. Of course up until now comics for the PSP were a collection of Jpeg images of comic book pages read via the PSP's Photo tab. Now, reading comics on the PSP has been taken to an entirely new level. This week, Digital Comics, PlayStation's new Comic Book service went live, and with it alot of Disney comic book content. Now if you have an older PSP like me, you will need to download the latest firmware, which includes the Digital Comics reader. New comics can be downloaded from the PlayStation store. Among the titles for download are familiar Marvel titles like Spiderman, X-Men etc... But, most importantly, for this post anyway, is that there are a lot of Disney titles. First of all PlayStation currently offers about 16 free comics for download, which include a short Donald Duck comic entitled "The Fussy Genie." this comic is a fun download just to get the feel for the PSP comic book experience. The Digital Comics reader is a fun piece of software, designed(it seems) to ensure that Comics fans who own a PSP will not only want to read comics on the PSP, but to also convince long time readers of comics on the PSP, that Digital Comics is a superior way to read comic books. Reading comics is made fun by flowing comic pages that zoom and pan based on the action in the story. There are stereo sound effects to emphasize the action at key points in the story and a very simple "page turning" effect that I thought was pretty cool. What might be the coolest feature of the software is the fact that you can read your comics and listen to your own MP3's at the same time via the software's own MP3 player!!! Now, I was already able to do this with the old way of reading comics on my PSP, but the difference is in the myriad of effects provided through the Digital Comics reader. Overall I think PlayStation's Digital Comics are a direct hit. the price is certainly right. Most of the Disney comics were reasonably priced between $.99 and $2.99 Now the Disney titles that are currently offered are nothing to laugh at... Well actually laughter is intended in many of the story lines...You know what I mean.
What I was surprised to find is that the Italian Mickey Mouse comic book series, Wizards of Mickey is available in english! Wizards of Mickey takes place in an alternate realm where Mickey, Goofy, and Donald are a Wizarding team competing in a mystical tournament. Wizards of Mickey is something of a sensation in Europe spawning a Collectible Card Game and a mobile video game. So make sure you update your PSP firmware and be the first kid on your block to get the next generation of Disney Digital Comics for your PSP. -Admiral Duke
